Lions are the second largest living feline species today. The lion population in Africa has been reduced by at least half, down to less than 21,000 living today. Lions tend to live in large groups called prides consisting about 15 lions. They live in grassy plains, savannas, and open woodlands. The lion is known as the “King of the Jungle” that possess beauty and strength. The average male weighs about 400 lbs while the female weighs about 290 lbs. Males and females are told apart by the males large furry mane hanging around their necks. Females do most all of the hunting. Lions eat big animals like rhinos, buffalos, and hippos. Also wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, wild hogs, and impalas. When females have their cubs, the litter size is about 3-4. Cubs are hunted by hyenas, leopards, and black-backed jackals. Cubs start hunting at 11 months old but don't leave their mothers until about 2 years old.
